CERTIFICATION COURSE - ONLINE AND/OR FACE TO FACE
Read For Africa offers individual teachers, parents, therapists, volunteers and others the opportunity to learn how to teach reading and spelling using the Phono-Graphix Reading method whilst working towards an international certification as an Independent Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist.
There is no set start date for this course. You can register anytime and from anywhere in Africa and slot into the next set of Live Zoom sessions or request recordings of relevant sessions if you would prefer to watch in your own time. OUR NEXT FACE 2 FACE 1-DAY COURSE IS SCHEDULED TO TAKE PLACE ON SATURDAY 14 October 2023 at SEREN HOUSE COTTAGE SCHOOL in Randburg from 9am to 2:30pm. Please let us know if you would like information on this option. The link below applies to the Face2Face and online options.
OUR NEXT LIVE ZOOM CYCLE STARTS ON SATURDAY 28 October 2023 - 9:30am to 1pm.
This sessions covers the overview of the programme as well as the first two levels - Pink (teaching 3 sound words) and Blue (teaching 4 sound words). The follow up session is then scheduled for Saturday 11 November 2023 from 9:30amd to 11:30am. This session covers the Green, Purple and Yellow levels of the programme.
The live Zoom sessions cover the exact same content as our 1-day Face2Face workshop. Anyone registered for the course is welcome to attend any zoom or Face2Face sessions or both at any time.

THE CERTIFICATION COURSE COVERS THE FOLLOWING:
- Overview of Theory in Phonetic Instruction
- Teaching Reading and Spelling
- Basic Code Reading and Spelling
- Advanced Code Reading and Spelling
- Multi-syllable Reading and Spelling
- Presentation of lessons for teaching reading and spelling at varying levels
- How to be a “buddy reader” and maximise reading time with learners to improve fluency as well as ones visual memory and therefore spelling.
- Assessment of Reading and Spelling Skills
- How to assess a learner.
- Discussion of standardised reading tests and error pattern analysis
- Question and Answer Session on practical application since Day 1 of the course
- Internship Preparation - how to get started with teaching reading, spelling and what to expect over the 12-weeks whether teaching a learner online or Face2Face.

This course will enhance your understanding of:
- How to assess reading and spelling ability qualitatively and quantitatively
- How to teach a new reader all the foundation skills needed to be a successful reader and speller
- How to plan a remediation program and how to implement a remediation program for reading and spelling difficulties
PRESENTER: Jenny Taylor:
B Phys Ed – Wits University; MEd – Wits University; Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist and Trainer
Jenny Taylor was trained by the developers of Phono-Graphix in the United Kingdom in 1999.
She established Read For Africa in 2000 as the vehicle to bring the Phono-Graphix reading method to South Africa. She has trained over 3000 teachers, parents and other therapists in the method and has taught thousands of children and adults to read.
She has worked with people with learning and intellectual disabilities through her involvement with Special Olympics, the Hamlet Adult Centre and the Sparrow Assisted Learning Centre. Her MEd research report, for which she was awarded a distinction, focused on Phono-Graphix in the South African context. She works with children and adults with learning difficulties as well as professional people who want to improve their spelling skills. Read For Africa has been involved in Adult Education and Learnership programmes where Phono-Graphix is applied to all curriculum areas. Jenny received an outstanding achievement award for her contribution to the development and upliftment of people with disabilities.

INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP ON PHONO-GRAPHIX IN ZOOM
If you are interested in finding out about Phono-Graphix and would like to attend an Introductory Workshop before committing to the full course, you're welcome to attend the first session of any scheduled Zoom courses for a fee of R400 per person. Our next cycle of courses in zoom starts on Saturday 28 October 2023 from 9:30am to 1pm.
This is a good opportunity to find out more about the programme, get an overview of the principles behind the methodology and confirm whether you would like to pursue the international certification. If you decide to register for the full course after this introduction, before the scheduled follow up session, then R400 will be deducted from th full fee.
Note: The workshop needs to be attended in person. We only share recordings with people are are registered for our full course.
ADVANCED PHONO-GRAPHIX WORKSHOP IN ZOOM
Our next Advanced Workshop is scheduled for Saturday 18 November 2023 from 9:30am to 1pm in Zoom.
If you are already an accredited Phono-Graphix Reading Therapist or if you're working towards your certification, this is a good opportunity to take Phono-Graphix to the next level and see how you can go from "Sound-to-Symbol-to-Meaning". This workshop is a good refresher, deals with integrating basic Phono-Graphix principles and strategies into all curriculum areas, will assist you in finalising the initial certification as well as working your way up the Phono-Graphix Hierarchy.
Note: This workshop needs to be attended in person as we don't share a recording of this workshop.
This workshop will be repeated in Zoom on Saturday 16 March 2023.
